6 Tips for Organizing Your Custom Closets

Since upgrading to custom closets, your home has been neater than ever. Even still, without proper organization, closets can become overrun with too many items and accessories. How can you neaten your closets and keep them that way?

Here are some easy tips for organizing your custom closets:

  • Separate by seasonality
  • Keep what you wear at eye level
  • Use baskets and bins
  • Store shoes on a fence or shelf
  • Roll up extra clothes and put them in drawers
  • Take advantage of tie and scarf racks

Keep reading for more details on each of these actionable tips so your custom closet looks as tidy and appealing as the day it was first installed!

Separate by Seasonality

If you feel like the space in your closet is sparse, it’s time to take stock of what you keep in there. Maybe you crammed in a whole year’s wardrobe. That could be your problem, as bulky winter clothes take up a lot of storage space.

Take everything out and give your space a thorough cleaning first. Then, look at what you’re keeping in there. If summer is six months away, does it really make sense to have your sundress and sandals at the ready? No!

If you have the room, use a divider to separate your cold-weather clothes from your summer ones. You can even store your off-season clothing in a spare closet.

Keep What You Wear at Eye Level

When your custom closets were installed, it was so easy to find what you needed. Over time, something changed, and now you're spending five or 10 minutes every morning looking for your favorite blouse or those shoes that match your tie.

Wasting time like this every day is the main reason you got custom closets in the first place. You can’t afford to be late to work or spend half the morning frazzled because your day got off on the wrong foot.

Since you took all of your clothes out anyway, it doesn’t hurt to assess your wardrobe by more than seasonality. You can instead use different criteria, such as what you wear the most often versus what you wear the least.

If you haven’t worn a garment in the last six months and certainly within the last year, then set it aside. You can reevaluate it after going through all of your other clothes. You might decide to put the item back for one more season or donate it.

If your rarely-worn clothes go in your closet again, then put them towards the back. Front and center should be your staple outfits that you wear the most. Keep them at eye level too. This way, they’re so accessible that you can quickly grab what you need and be onto the rest of your day. No more frazzled mornings for you!

Use Your Closet’s Baskets and Bins

You outfitted your closets with a bevy of accessories such as baskets and bins. Yet you have to admit that you’ve rarely opened them. Why not put them to use?

Wire baskets let you see the contents easily so nothing you store in there is ever lost or misplaced. In a bedroom closet, you can stash blankets, linens, and decorative items that aren’t particularly fragile in wire baskets. They can also be used to store cleaning supplies in your hallway or utility closets.

Bins are the perfect solution for smaller items that would otherwise disappear. Use velvet-lined jewelry drawers for your favorite keepsake jewelry.

Store Shoes on a Fence or Shelves

Maybe it’s not clothes or linens that are overwhelming your closet, but your massive shoe collection. There’s nothing wrong with owning an enviable number of shoes, but you have to find a proper home for them.

A shoe fence will give you a place for every pair while still letting you display them beautifully in your custom closets. Shoe shelves are another organizational solution that will neaten your closet’s floor space.

As recommended throughout this article, it’s never a bad idea to take all of your shoes out and assess them. Go through them one by one. Older, worn shoes should be disposed of, but lightly used shoes can potentially be donated if you don’t want them anymore. For however many pairs you decide to keep, sort them by season and how often you use them.

Roll Up Extra Clothes and Put Them in Drawers

You had never realized your wardrobe was so big until you reorganized your closet. There’s so much you haven’t yet added, but if you put anything else in there, it’s going to get disorganized again.

Does your closet contain extra storage boxes? These boxes aren’t only useful for odds and ends, but for clothing as well. From workout clothing to leggings and t-shirts, you can tightly roll certain pieces and place them in, for example, a drawer or cloth-lined box. You might have to iron out the wrinkles the next time you want to wear the rolled-up garments, but your closet will certainly be more organized.

Scarf Rack

Take Advantage of Tie and Scarf Racks

Perhaps your issue is that your ties and scarves are out of control. Belts also fall like snakes from the upper shelves. These items seemingly have no home, but using slide-out racks will change that. You can even add belts to a rack. Doing so is beneficial for several reasons.

Unlike storing these items in drawers, a slide-out rack allows you to see your entire collection at once so you can choose your favorite tie to make you feel cheery on a gloomy Monday. Even better is that you don’t have to worry about your ties or scarves developing wrinkles like they would when folded. If you’ve ever tried to iron out wrinkles on a tie, it’s a pain, not to mention it’s time-consuming.

Conclusion

Once you get custom closets installed, you have to keep them neat, or your organizational woes will return. Once or twice per year, go through everything in your closet, decide what to keep and what to toss, and keep opening up new space. That’s a great way to stay organized! The tips in this article encompass everything typically stored in a closet, from clothing to shoes, linens, cleaning supplies, ties, jewelry, belts, and scarves.
